Enter the Sandman ...

The Sandman, in folklore, literature, and song, is a tricky figure. He can bring good dreams, or he can creep into the sleeping imagination and turn those dreams dark. In either iteration, he's been around for a long, long time, and in his darker incarnations seems to suggest the loss of innocence. Take today's song, from the Lost Boys of Metallica, which came out when I was about 13.

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget my son
To include everyone
I tuck you in
Warm within
Keep you free from sin
'Til the sandman he comes

Sleep with one eye open

Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light

Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never never-land

Sleep tight. ~Alice
